Cerridwen: Keeper of the Cauldron, Welsh Enchantress of Creative Alchemy and Divine Knowledge
Who Is Cerridwen?
Cerridwen is a powerful figure in Welsh mythology, often revered as a goddess of inspiration, magic, and deep creative force. She is tied to themes of life, death, and rebirth, and known for her fierce protection, mystical wisdom, and shape-shifting ability. While some later interpretations labeled her a witch, she was originally a divine mother figure, a magical matron of knowledge, and a guide through the unseen.

The Myth of Cerridwen and the Birth of Taliesin
Cerridwen lived near Bala Lake with her husband, Tegid Foel, and their two children: Creirwy, their radiant daughter, and Morfran, their son, whose appearance was considered dreadful. Hoping to grant him a gift that might help him thrive in the world, Cerridwen brewed a potion intended to bestow wisdom and inspiration.
This potion required constant stirring for a year and a day. She appointed a servant boy named Gwion Bach to tend the cauldron. On the final day, three drops of the magical brew splashed onto Gwion’s finger. Only these first drops carried the gift of Awen; the rest had become a deadly poison. When Gwion instinctively licked the drops, he was flooded with divine insight and the gift of prophecy.
Knowing Cerridwen’s wrath would be unforgiving, Gwion fled. A magical chase followed as both shapeshifted through a series of forms, hare and greyhound, fish and otter, bird and hawk. At last, Gwion transformed into a single grain of corn. Cerridwen, now a black hen, swallowed him.
Nine months later, she gave birth to him in human form. Moved by his beauty and power, she could not bring herself to destroy him. Instead, she placed him in a leather bag and cast him into the sea.
The child was found by Elffin ap Gwyddno, a nobleman of great fortune. He named the radiant boy Taliesin. That child would grow to become the greatest bard in Welsh mythology, a singer of truth and time.

-

Use this prayer or chant to connect with Cerridwen, especially under a Waning or Dark Moon, when the veil is thin and her cauldron calls.
Cerridwen of the Cauldron deep,
Keeper of secrets and dreams in sleep,
Stir my soul, awaken my sight,
Guide me through the darkest night.
Grant me wisdom, fierce and true,
As I walk the path I’m called to do.
So mote it be.
Cerridwen's Connection to the Books of Fferyllt and Seasonal Associations
Cerridwen is sometimes associated with the mystical "Books of Fferyllt," a set of magical teachings attributed to Welsh Druidic lore. While much of this connection is modern or reconstructed, the symbolism fits. She embodies the alchemist, the wise woman, and the initiator of hidden knowledge. Her cauldron can be seen as a metaphor for the crucible of esoteric study and inner work.
Cerridwen’s energy is strongly tied to autumn and the waning year. As the season of harvest and release approaches, many witches and spiritual practitioners honor her as part of the "Season of the Witch." She presides over the inward pull of fall, when we let go, reflect, and prepare for renewal. In the cycle of the wheel of the year, Cerridwen aligns with Samhain, the Crone, and the descent into the mystery of the underworld.
Final Reflections on Cerridwen
Cerridwen is not a soft or passive goddess. She brews what must be faced, stirs what has stagnated, and births what is ready to rise. She challenges as much as she comforts, guiding those who are ready to face their own depths and emerge with purpose and insight.
To work with Cerridwen is to walk a sacred path of wisdom, poetry, and power. Whether you meet her in dreams, rituals, or quiet moments by candlelight, she invites you to stir your own cauldron and become who you are meant to be.
